On Saturday July 19th, Team Rising Phoenix Jaycees (RPJ) gathered to support Relay for Life Magic Island. The event is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. The idea behind Relay for Life is to relay around a track overnight to celebrate cancer survivors and remember lost loved ones. As a team, RPJ raised a total of $1,697.67 for Relay for Life Magic Island! GO RPJ! The top individual fundraiser is Sara King with a total of $315. For all her efforts, Sara received a one year free membership to Rising Phoenix Jaycees.
The theme of Relay was Olympics and team members came dressed in athletic wear. At the beginning of the night, there was an Opening Ceremony to kick start Relay for Life Magic Island. All the cancer survivors gathered in front of the stage with their team captain holding a torch, just like the Olympics! The survivors took the first lap around the track and soon after the rest of the teams followed. Each team took turns showing off their team flag they created. Team RPJ’s flag was awesome!
During the event there were a lot of activities that were provided by American Cancer Society and other fundraising teams. Other fundraisers included bake sales, massages, selling food, memorabilia, karaoke etc. RPJ did not fundraise the night of the event, but fundraised the money prior to the event so the team could enjoy Relay for Life Magic Island. Some of the highlights of the night were socializing, eating, dancing, taking pictures, doing team laps around the track, participating in group Zumba and playing life size board games! Team RPJ really broke out a sweat during Zumba! Who knew it was such a good workout?
About 4 hours into the event, a storm began to develop and the event was cut short. However, despite the storm coming in, team RPJ had a fantastic and fun time participating in Relay for Life Magic Island!
THANK YOU to ALL who have helped to support and participate in Relay for Life Magic Island! Together we can Finish the Fight against cancer!!
