National Champs!

Congratulations to the RPJ debate team of Roger Gumerman, Shelby Taguma, and Jeremy K. Yamamoto for winning 1st place at the United States Jaycees National Convention in New Orleans, LA yesterday. They defeated last year’s championship team from the Houston Asian Jaycees.
This is the second year in a row that RPJ members took home a national award. Last year, Rebecca Soon won the C. William Brownfield Memorial and Speak-Up awards at last year’s national convention in Florida. Rebecca, Kekoa McClellan, and Makana Shook helped coach RPJ’s winning team.
Hawaii Jaycees from two other chapters were also in the mix for national awards, but finished just short of the top spots. Honolulu Chinese Jaycees President Ryan Ng won second place in the Speak-Up competition, and Honolulu Filipino Jaycees Membership VP Karen Nakagawa finished second in the Jaycee Jeopardy competition. Karen was also a semi-finalist for the C. William Brownfield Memorial Award.
