New Orleans Bound!

Roger Gumerman, Shelby Taguma, and Jay Yamamoto would like to thank everyone for their support. After numerous Fundraisers, the Rising Phoenix Jaycees competitors are finally New Orleans bound to compete in the National Jaycees Convention – June 1 through June 6th, 2010.
MEET THE COMPETITORS:
SHELBYAre you excited to go to New Orleans? Oh Yeah! Why is Rising Phoenix the Best Hawaii State Chapter? Because we’re the best looking, most fashionable, most athletic, LOL! In all seriousness we draw in a diverse membership – not defined by cultural, social, or vocational characteristics. Hobbies: Art, writing, reading, volleyball, basketball, working out, concocting my own vegetarian dishes, crosswords, culture of sarcasm, anything to do with social sciences, evolution, and dogs. School: International School of Sacred Heart (Tokyo), James Madison University (VA). Work: Litigation Supervisor @ Law Firm.
ROGER- is a young architect currently working on the Aulani Disney Hawaii Resort, opening in the fall of 2011. In his free time he enjoys surfing, hiking, and playing softball with friends. He is known to quote Top Gun, and use the words ‘dude’ and ‘awesome’ frequently. Roger is active in his church and with Habitat for Humanity.
Are you excited to go to New Orleans? I am excited to participate in the debate competition, and to witness how positive community efforts are continuing to rebuild New Orleans. Why is Rising Phoenix the Best Hawaii State Chapter? I feel RPJ is the best Hawaii State Chapter because of the diverse professions and backgrounds represented in the membership. Members also strongly support fundraisers, sports teams, and social events. Hobbies: Sports, both spectating and participating, specifically volleyball, basketball, football, baseball, tennis and the Olympics. Outdoor activities, crossword puzzles, cooking, Facebook-ing, reading and passing fashion judgement to high-maintenance, arrogant, yet ignorant people.
JAY – School: Kohala High School (1992). Brigham Young University (1992-1994, 1996). University of Hawai’i (1997-2000). Jobs: Currently, Temp employee for OfficeTeam. Had assignments at HMSA, Aloha Petrolum, H&R Block, Anthology Marketing Group and Moanalani Spa at the Moana Surfrider Resort. Am I excited to go to New Orleans? The oldest gay bar in America, Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop is a hop, skip and jump away from our hotel. Who wouldn’t be excited? Plus, the Louisiana Superdome is up the road from us. And, it’ll give the rest of the nation a peak at what happens when you team a diplomatic White boy, an sagacious Asian girl and a sanguine multi-ethnic kid on a debate team. They better be ready for us.
