Members and Friends Lend a Hand at Special Olympics; Convention Greets National President
The month of August saw the chapter ramping up activities. Several members and friends volunteered as bocce ball officials at the Special Olympics Aukake Classic on Saturday, August 18. Thanks to Winston Chow and Ryan Murabayashi for gathering volunteers. Mahalo to the following members who showed up bright and cheery at 7 a.m. that day to volunteer: Eve Epitome, Sara & Jason King, Anna & Ryan Lee, Dawn Martin, Nathan Martin, Jenny Migita, Ryan Murabayashi, Dani White, and Elvin Berzabal.
Last month was also the Hawaii Jaycees Second Trimester Convention. The convention was held the weekend of August 24-26. Several RPJ members attended various parts of the convention. Members socialized and dined Friday night with United States Jaycees National President Travis Ahlquist at Max’s of Manila, and the training workshops and individual competitions were conducted Saturday at the Ala Moana Hotel. President Travis conducted the training, which presented in-depth previews of the training modules offered by the Junior Chamber International. Please read more about the convention and check out more pics after the break.
The election meeting for the 2013 state board was also held at Ala Moana, and it saw 2011 Filipino Junior Chamber chapter president Jay Raymundo elected as the successor to RPJ’s own Eve Epitome as next year’s Hawaii Jaycees state president. RPJ had seven delegates at the election: Elvin Berzabal, Jason King, Nathan Martin, Winston Chow, Mike Young, Jay Yamamoto and Jenny Migita. New member Jenny was also officially sworn in by national president Travis following the election meeting. Several members also received presidential merit awards at the awards banquet held later that night at the Dave & Buster’s Showroom: Jason King, Dawn Martin, Nathan Martin and Mike Young.
The convention officially concluded Sunday morning at the state board of directors meeting at the Moili’ili Community Center. Elvin Berzabal and Nathan Martin presented RPJ’s bids to host the year-end convention and Three Outstanding Young Persons Awards banquet at Ala Moana Hotel, which were accepted by the board. Special thanks to former RPJ chapter president and Hawaii Jaycees state president Jon Nishihara for his mentorship on the bid process and planning.
